A friend of the family's son lives in Tokyo and recommended we reach out to Marky. He replied promptly to our emails and listened to our requests and put together a really fun day for our family. The missus and I wanted some culture, the kids wanted fun stuff. We saw sumo wrestlers in the morning and a crazy anime temple and a maid cafe. We were leery about the maids at first, but he was right. It was unforgettable. We went shopping in a anime neighborhood. We ate Japanese curry. We wanted to see a Japanese garden, but it started raining. Without missing a beat, Marky took us to a samurai museum instead. The kids got to dress up like samurai and ninjas and loved it. We invited him to join us for dinner and he made us reservations at a traditional tofu restaurant. The staff were in kimonos and we had a traditional private room with a view of gorgeous Japanese garden. He's a great guy and so knowledgeable. Absolutely recommend.

Shame about the weather!

Architect here. I took the architecture walking tour. Marky is a ball of energy and enthusiasm. I was jetlagged and hungover. We took the day slow. It rained so we visited a nearby museum. Learned about dark ages execution. Japanese curry is delicious.

Architect's wife here. Our day with Marky was lovely. Mother Nature didn't cooperate with us, but there was always a loo, shelter, or some interesting place to go inside. Our 2 teenage boys (18 and 20) ruined Papa's camera, but our guide knew where to buy replacements.

weird, unexpected

The best parts of the tour for me were the weird, unexpected bits: drinking in public (I like to drink), weird cat street + food, running into the old man in the cemetery who awkwardly yammered on about unrelated American history stuff, interesting local details such as the social makeup of the neighborhoods we traveled through as compared to that of today, information about types of headstones in the cemeteries, the stop by Tenno-ji pagoda, and Mark's strong opinions about the Kan'ei-ji temple grounds and its makeover. In general, Mark was fun, engaging, and informative without being dry and generic. Many of the spots of interest also happened to be near food/drink/restrooms, which was great!

I definitely plan on round 2!

This was pretty much all I was hoping for. An in-depth, funny, fascinating tour of Edo history from someone who knows his stuff. I would totally do this again, and if/when I'm back in Tokyo, I definitely plan on round 2!

Gives you a feel of each historical figure

Marky discusses history in a way that makes you feel you're hearing an actual cool story rather than a classroom lecture 🙂
Aside from just telling you what happened where, he gives you a good feel of the personality of each historical figure that you can actually see them as characters rather than just figures. Go ahead, ask him which ones are his favorite and who he hates!

There was a lot of walking, which we were warned about. I was physically not in great shape for so much walking, but that's my own fault. I was enjoying the tour too much to give it much thought, though.

Marky’s is an encyclopedia of Japan.

Insight and knowledge

I thought this tour was fucking awesome! Mark's insight and knowledge of the locations and the neighborhoods we explored really helped flesh out aspects of Edo and post-Edo period history for us in an exciting way. His friendliness and willingness to contextualize what we were looking at even made the tour interesting and fun to our non-history buff friends, which was great! I would happily go for another!

I would do again

Informative but not dry; I was probably the least familiar with Japanese history out of the group but I still thoroughly enjoyed myself. I feel like Marky went out of his way to include me (my friends are obsessed with Japan). When I was cold, he bought me a lovely hot tea. I would do again and recommend.

Irreverently Respectful

I took Japanese in university but this is my first time to visit Japan. I follow Marky's blog and Twitter. I've seen Japan through his eyes for many years, so it was a no brainer to book a tour and meet the man behind the legend. He couldn't be nicer or more humble. I wanted to see the execution grounds of Edo and he said he wanted to make that kind of tour so I was a guinea pig. It was so much fun. Everything I expected. Marky's is knowledgeable, sarcastic, and 100% unscripted.

Loved it!

Yanaka Cemetery, Kan'ei-ji (all the parts), Ueno Tosho-gu, pausing by the entrance to Ueno park where the illustrations showing the old Kan'ei-ji grounds compared to the Meiji era grounds, and then looking at Saigo Takamori's statue. I very much enjoyed the side trips (red light district, weird cat street) and drinking in public while on our walk.

So much nerdy fun!

I’ve been reading Marky’s website for a few years now because the guy clearly knows what he’s talking about. I took his Shogun Graves Part 1 day tour and with in an hour I felt like we were old friends. I came for the cherry blossoms 2020. The country locked down a few weeks later, I think. So glad I didn’t cancel. I thought Marky was just a history nerd, but nope. He’s like a professor of all things Japan. I should have broughten a pen and paper to take notes. I plan one of his other tours next time.
